We exist to be a committed community of Christ followers dedicated to growing in faith, living whole lives, and seeking justice for the good of our world.
An Overview of Missiongathering
We are a diverse, inclusive, and innovative Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) committed to empowering you to live a vibrant and whole live. Every aspect of our church centers on the belief that every single person is loved by God and has a purpose. We are committed to being a no-judgment environment that embraces everyone from every walk of life to join us as we seek to live healthy lives and work to create a more beautiful and just world, one subversive act of love at a time.
We believe that actions speak louder than words, and works are more important than belief. We’re a church that celebrates curiosity and conviction, and doesn’t think that we’ve got it all (or anything) figured out. We believe that by walking together as a diverse community with different beliefs and opinions, we’re all challenged to grow and expand our thinking, which is kind of the point. Most of all, we are a community. We are committed to loving and doing life with each other through the thick and thin of it, and pulling together our collective energies to make a tangible impact on San Diego for the common good of everyone.
We’re truly a different kind of church, and we hope you’ll join us one Sunday to see these words in action.
Missiongathering began in the summer of 2006 with young adults from the San Diego area who were disenchanted with the institutional church. Our gatherings became a safe haven for restless spiritual wanderers who were seeking an authentic and progressive faith community. After several years of meeting in other church buildings, then the North Park Theater, then behind Claire DeLune’s, Missiongathering finally purchased and renovated an historic North Park church building in the summer of 2011, and became San Diego’s Neighborhood Church. In 2017, our elders hired our new Lead Pastor, Christian author and activist Brandan Robertson to lead Missiongaterhing into the next chapter of our ministry in San Diego.
We are part of a denomination called The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Disciples have a rich and diverse history driven not by dogma and creed, but by a welcoming Spirit of Christ and a foundation built on the Bible, baptism, communion, and freedom of belief.
Community: We believe that God is most powerfully experienced in relationship to other people. We commit to doing life with one another through the highs and lows, supporting, encouraging, and empowering one another to grow in spiritual maturity and wholeness as we seek to live into our mission together to impact San Diego.
Christ: We are a community centered on the person and teachings of Jesus Christ. We uphold our denominations (The Disciples of Christ) theological declaration that there is no creed but Christ, and therefore welcome everyone’s various beliefs and perspectives to the table and refuse to divide over theological disagreements but instead engage in robust dialogue about our beliefs and experiences, as we seek to conform our lives to the example of Jesus.
Justice: We believe that a just and fair world is God’s deepest desire. Therefore, we believe that God has called each one of us to be agents of justice and reconciliation in the world and that when we work for the healing and dignity of the world, we are worshipping God in the way God desires most.
Wholeness: We believe that the message of Christianity ultimately calls us to seek redemption and healing in every aspect of our own lives, and to pursue wholeness through disciplines for our mind, body, and spirit. We commit to working together to grow in mental, bodily, and spiritual wellness and depth.
Grace: We know that we all have flaws and make mistakes, so we commit to being a people who refuse judgment and embrace unconditional forgiveness, favor, and love for all people in response to the extravagant grace that God has for each one of us. We commit to walking with one another through our failures and seeking restoration and redemption whenever possible.
Everyone: We believe that the good news of Jesus is for absolutely all people, without exception. We believe that God loves and redeems every human being, not in spite of but because of our diversity of race, culture, creed, sexuality, gender identity, age, different-ableness, and every other unique part of our identities. All are always welcome, without exception to participate, serve, and lead at every level in our community.
Statement of Faith
While we don't require anyone to believe anything to participate in the ministries of our church, our elders and teaching team share the following general, historically Christian convictions:
As a committed community of Christ followers, we commit to being guided by the following convictions in the leadership and ministry of our church:
We believe in God, the Creator, the Sustainer, and the Ground of Life of all that exists in the Universe.
We believe that Jesus is the incarnation of God and demonstrated the way of salvation, reconciliation, and redemption for the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit of God’s active and living presence in our life and our world, calling us forward towards conformity to the values and image of Christ.
We believe that the Bible is inspired Scripture, passed down by our forerunners in the faith for our guidance, nourishment, and direction. We believe that engaging with scriptures faithfully means engaging with them critically and creatively.
We believe in the power of God’s Love and Grace to bring ultimate salvation, reconciliation, and redemption to all people and all things.
We believe that all humans, in all of our diversity, reflect the image of God and are children of God. We believe that humans often turn away from what is good and right, and thus bring destruction to ourselves and the world.
We believe that all people are invited to have a relationship with God and that following in the path of Jesus will bring about redemption of our lives and our world.
We believe that statement of beliefs all fall short of our understanding of the infinite God and therefore commit to humility, curiosity, and willingness to change what we believe to be more in line with our understanding of God, humanity, and the world we live in.

"One of my favorite churches in the country—Missiongathering … has managed to attract throngs of young people by fostering a community that is diverse, inclusive, biblically literate, spiritually connected, appreciative of both liturgy and contemporary worship, and absolutely bursting at the seams with grace.”
